  • Australia has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world
  • 2 out of 3 people who live in Australia all their lives will get skin cancer at some time
  • In Australia about 1200 people die from skin cancer each year
  • Most skin cancers can be prevented
  • Nearly all skin cancers can be cured if treatment starts early
  • Exposure to iltraviolet (UV) rays is the major cause of skin cancer

    It is important to protect yourself from the sun's harmful UV rays when you are outside. Remember to:

  • SLIP on a shirt with a collar and sleeves
  • SLOP on sunscreen that is at least SPF 15, broad spectrum and water resistant
  • SLAP on a hat with a wide brim or a cap with flaps to shade your face, neck and ears
  • Wear sunglasses that meet Australian Standard AS1067 and that fit the face well
